Blue Sapphire

General Information

 

Sapphires are predominantly a strong blue however, they may also be colourless, or in shades of green, gray and black. They are the birthstone for September the Zodiac signs of Pisces, Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius. Sapphire is given as a gem for the 5th, 23rd and 45th wedding anniversaries while a star sapphire is given on the 65th wedding anniversary.

 

Biggest Ever Found
The 423-carat (85 g) Logan sapphire in the National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C., is one of the largest faceted gem-quality blue sapphires in existence.

During the Medieval Ages, European lapidaries came to refer to blue corundum crystal by its “sapphire-blue” colour, whence the modern name for “sapphire”.
